Patterns in Child Development
Steiner’s insights and cycles of growth reflecting planetary qualities in the early years
For many years Susan has been researching the archetypal patterns of development in childhood, integrating Rudolf Steiner’s insights into development with other child development research and in particular the work of the Gesell Institute of Child Development. From this she has developed profiles of each stage of development which describe the characteristic behaviour and the changing ‘temperamental tendencies’ or ‘moods’ of each age: amenable or challenging, insecure or adventurous, dependent or independent, interested in the details or the big picture etc. Remarkably, she has found that Gesell’s stages reflect the traditional qualities of the planets, which offer children, in a rhythmical way, the experience of the many different aspects of being human.
Susan Laing is a parent educator and a mother of four children. She was a founding friend of the Mt Barker Waldorf School. She has 30 years experience as an educational consultant working in Steiner schools around Australia to support conscious, creative and courageous living with children.
